PFDs are jackets that are used primarily in water-based activities such as river rafting. They are made to save a person from drowning. It is very important that these jackets fit properly to function effectively.
There are 5 types of PFDs available: Type 1, Type 2, Type 3, Type 4, and Type 5. Generally, Type 3 jackets are recommended as they provide good support for balancing.
2) Certified Instructors with Every Raft
A naive person is always unaware of using the raft the right way, hence there exists a need for a person to guide the paddlers on how to move on running waters to avoid accidents. Therefore, a basic rhythm is needed for a raft to move in a certain direction.
3) Practice Sessions Before you start Rafting
A practice session in calm water is needed for rafting. Everybody needs to take a mock swim with PFDs to deal with urgent waterfalls or accidents. Paddle techniques and communication amongst the paddlers are crucial. With proper coordination, you could save yourself and co-rafters from big tragedies.
4) Choosing the Right River or Route
Seeking local knowledge, choosing the right water, and determining the water difficulty is key to safety. River conditions change with changes in temperature, therefore it is more suitable to raft in rainy seasons. Low water levels can lead to rock exposure, while high water can increase water intensity.
5) Lifeguards and First Aids for Emergencies
Lifeguards are needed for maintaining the safety of people in rafts. Lifeguards ensure that all the necessary equipment like rafts, paddles, PFDs, and helmets are in good working condition. Lifeguards also brief you about the dos and don'ts regarding risks involved in the activity.
While most white water river rafting uses these standard protocols for maintaining the safety of travelers, India's utmost focus is concentrated on river rafting as it is now being practiced in most parts of rivers in Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, and Delhi.
